Analysis of the causes of incompatibility between oils

Nov. 03, 2020

1. The strength of the oil film is affected: increased abrasion, temperature rise, heat, vibration or noise.

2. Decreased demulsification ability: Lubricating oil originally has good demulsification ability-it can be separated from water quickly when it comes into contact with water, but the demulsification ability of lubricating oil is not good after mixing, and lubricant emulsification occurs.

3. Color change: It is normal for the color and transparency of the lubricant to change with use during use. However, the color of the lubricating oil has changed before it is used very much, the transparency is reduced, and the lubricating oil becomes dark. It should be considered whether incompatible lubricating oil is introduced.

4. Bubble problem: One of the symptoms that may be caused by the incompatibility of lubricating oil is that the ability of lubricating oil to "handle" air is reduced: it is manifested as a decrease in the anti-foaming property, the air in the oil cannot be discharged, and the foam increases.

5. Occurrence of insoluble matter: flocs, additive precipitation, paint film, sludge, sediment, oil level drops, leaving a dirt layer in the sight glass or oil pool, etc., and the oil filter is blocked in advance. All of these may It is a by-product of incompatible lubricants.

What situations should be wary of lubricant incompatibility:

1. Oil product merger: For example, you now use 10 different lubricants, and now you are adjusted to reduce the number of oil products in use to a few or less-oil product merger and unification have its advantages, but Pay special attention to compatibility issues when changing oils.

2. Change the oil supplier: If you change to another lubricating oil supplier, or use the brand of lubricating oil.

3. Upgrade oil: The machine has higher requirements for lubricating oil, and the oil is upgraded or replaced with special oil.

4. Pay attention to new machines and reassembled machines: The inner surface of these machines is coated with anti-corrosion layer, or some lubricating oil that you may not know, so don't ignore it.

5. Human factors: Which employees are responsible for lubrication? Do they know that lubricating oil cannot be mixed at will? The lubrication of the equipment should be assigned to the designated person, and the corresponding error-proof reminder signs should be marked.

Why is it incompatible?

Lubricant = base oil + additives. Lubricants are incompatible in the following situations:

1. When different base oils are mixed, a reaction between the base oils causes poor dissolution of additives.

2. A chemical reaction has occurred between different base oils, or the base oils repel each other.

3. The base oil reacts with foreign additives to form intermediate products.

4. Different additives are incompatible, resulting in products that are difficult to dissolve in the base oil.

5. Different additives neutralize each other, weakening or even changing the original effect of additives.
